Slinfold Men fell just short in their bid to retain the Challenge Cup this year, as Mid Sussex produced a strong showing in the second leg to win the match 7 – 5 overall — their first-ever win in the history of this match.
After a solid 3.5 – 2.5 win at home, Slinfold travelled for the away leg with confidence and a narrow lead. But Mid Sussex playing on their home turf, came out firing and took early control of the match.
Despite some determined performances from our players, Mid Sussex gained momentum early with wins in the first three matches:
Andrew Dickinson & Neil Tuesley: Lost 4&3
Paul McHale & Tom O'Donoghue: Lost 3&2
Pip Lee & Jamie McIntyre: Lost 3&1
Slinfold earned a hard-fought half in Match 4 and battled to the end, picking up a win in the final match of the day:
Clive Wright & Andy Smith: Halved
Jeff Jones & Jon Hammond: Lost 2&1
Joe Sillett & Robert Burge: Won 1up
That meant the away leg ended 4.5 – 1.5 in Mid Sussex's favour, giving them a well-earned 7 – 5 win on aggregate and the trophy for the very first time.
Slinfold Men are already looking forward to winning the trophy back next year and restoring the balance in this friendly rivalry.
This marks the end of the Mens friendlies and I'd like to thank all players that participated throughout the season. Well done team.
