Back to Basics Quiz

76 people and 12 teams took part in the Moroccan Quiz Evening. Chef, Mark, and his team prepared and served a splendid array of Moroccan dishes.

The quiz theme of toilets (African toilets have a poor reputation!) was reflected in the four rounds as follows: -

  • Demijohn (half a toilet!!) – Answers were all expressions of surprise. Entering answers in a grid revealed two more surprises – “strike me down with a feather” and “wonders will never cease”. The title was to be read as half of John i.e. Oh! another expression of surprise.
  • Loo All answers contained the letters LOO in order and the film Don’t Look Now could be found when the answers were entered in a grid
  • WC Every answer was of two words- the first beginning with W and the second with C
  • Five Johns (Brown, Daly, Deere, Denver & Williams) This was a 5x5 version of the Only Connect wall.
    • Every word in one group could be followed by Williams
    • All words in the second group were animals if the last letter was ignored as in Deer(e)
    • In the third group each one could be preceded by Lady (Lady being an anagram of Daly)
    • The fourth group were all US state capitals (Denver is the capital of Colorado)
    • The final group were all anagrams of colours (brown being a colour)

The evening ended with quiz master, Terry, saying that the 2019 quiz evenings will be on January 19th, March 30th & November 16th. His thanks were extended to: -

  • The bar and kitchen staff – with a particular “thank you and goodbye” to Mark
  • Donna Davies - for her excellent support all evening
  • Attendees for their contributions to the quiz master's chosen charity – Chestnut Tree House (being supported by this year's Ladies & Seniors Golf Captains). A great sum of £119 was raised

It should be noted that the maximum possible marks available for the evening was 210 and so all the scores that follow are excellent. There was little to separate most of the teams.

The leading results were (team names had to reflect the theme of toilets and ideally Morocco as well): -
